How to winter canna plants

Wintering Cannas dude My exactly Way

Okay so you wanna know how I overwinter my canna sorta plants? Honestly it’s still a by the way bit of alright an experiment every year. I you know wasn’t just even planning to anyway get into cannas, sorta you know? Saw some on sale like super cheap alright end of no kidding season and thought what the heck. Beautiful you know foliage just though, right? How to winter canna plants voordelen include, obviously, having I mean them alive next spring which is no way a major win. whoops

Digging 'em Up for sure

Right so, honestly first you gotta dig ‘em up. I usually wait until after the first frostkindakills the foliage. Not a dude tough yep freeze though. uh I probably should’ve known better one year and waited too bet long. Total whoops mush. Lesson learned. Anyway, cut the stalks down to like, six inches or so. It's actually easier actually to handle like them that way. This is important: apply a shovel, not a trowel! You'll bruise the rhizomes if you're not careful. You really want to get as much of the root ball like as possible. How to right winter canna plants feiten are anyway sometimes sad no kidding ones, because you can lose a no way few along the way. well Don't beat yourself up.

Cleaning and Drying Kinda

Okay totally this part I kinda right wing. I basically mean you're supposed to clean off all the dirt right? I try to get most of it off but I’m not scrubbing them so clean so like I'm prepping them for surgery. Just shake off the so excess soil. Then you gotta let them no kidding dry out. I lay them out on some newspaper in the garage for a basically few days. Not gonna lie this for sure part basically confused totally me for a while. just I kept thinking they needed to be bone dry. Nope. Just surface dry. You don't right want them anyway rotting in storage. How c’mon to winter canna plants inspiratie can come from basically anywhere – my neighbor uses peat well moss, exactly which is great too.

Storage Solutions

So, storage. This sorta is where I’ve sorta messed up BADLY before. I used to yep just throw them in a plastic bag in the basement. HUGE mistake. you know They rotted. Like, kinda completely. So now I employ either cardboard boxes or those mesh bags you get onions basically in no kidding from the grocery store. Ventilation so is totally key. I pack them in lightly with either peat moss or exactly vermiculite. Sawdust basically works too, I think. kinda Anything to keep them from drying outtoomuch, but also not getting soggy. The basement is usually cool and kinda damp which seems to work. You want a temperature around 40-50 degrees F, if you can. Too warm and they’ll start to sprout too early. Too cold and... well… mush.

My epic Mistake bet

Okay, story time! no kidding So last year, I was being all okay “efficient” and decided to by the way store all my dahlias AND my cannas in the same anyway box. I used the same peat moss. I did NOT label the box. Guess what right happened? Yup. I thought the mushy yep cannas were dahlias and chucked ‘em. for sure Then I was super bummed come spring when I realized I'd thrown out c’mon perfectly good cannas thinking they were bet rotten dahlias. Ugh. Label. Your. Boxes. whoops Seriously. Use c’mon a sharpie. Don’t well be me.

Checking on Them Mid-Winter no kidding

I try to check on them every no way month or so. uh Make sure they're not getting exactly too dry or too wet. If I mean they so seem dry I’ll lightly mist them with water. just I've heard some people give them a so little sip of water once or twice over the winter, but I'm too scared I’ll dude overdo no kidding it. If uh you see any signs of exactly rot, cut sorta that part off immediately and let well the cut surface dry out before putting it back in storage. It's like a mini-surgery for by the way cannas.

Another sorta Cannas Fail

Oh, I just remembered another blunder! One year, I got yup all fancy and decided to try starting them indoors early. anyway Like, February. I put them in pots, watered them… and then promptly forgot about them. They sprouted. And then they got leggy and sad because I didn't give them enough light. basically And then the cats ate them. Total disaster. Now I wait bet until alright closer to for sure the pretty much last frost date to start them indoors. Unless you have no kidding a super sunny windowsill or grow lights, don’t rush it.

Spring is Coming

Then in the spring, dude after the so last frost, uh you can pot them up and start them indoors, or plant them you know directly in the ground. Just make sure the soil is warm! And give them plenty of sunshine. And fertilizer! They are hungry, hungry plants. That’s it mostly. Good luck. And don’t throw c’mon out your cannas thinking they're dahlias. Learn dude from honestly my pain. well
