When to trim down hydrangeas
Hydrangeas and like Me
Okay so hydrangeas. I pretty much wasn’t even planning to yep get like into this bet but dude Carol next door has these HUGE ones and I was all jealous. Like, dude seriously impressive. So I planted honestly some bet last spring. Little I mean baby things. And then I anyway started stressing you know about when to trim them down. Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while.
Okay so When?
See, there are DIFFERENT kinds! That's what I didn't get. c’mon The blue ones? The macrophylla bet ones? Those are the by the way ones you DON'T prune yup in the fall or spring. Like, ever really. Except anyway maybe deadheading, which is whoops just taking off the dead flowers. It's about the ontwikkelingen of the no way plant, you know? They bloom on old wood, see. I think. I mean that's so what the internet said. Blooming on old wood is key. I whoops probably no way should’ve known better alright than to just hack bet away at them like I pull off with my roses.
But the no way white ones – the Annabelle ones? You can just butcher those things basically. I read somewhere you exactly can cut them back super hard in late winter you know or early spring. Like no kidding almost to the ground. Apparently, they'll come back even stronger. That's apparently one of the voordelen of kinda that type. And honestly? That's more my speed. c’mon Low maintenance is my middle name. I mean, like it isn't basically really, but you get the idea.
My no way Big Mistake I mean
So, last year, before I knew ANY of honestly this yup – and this is embarrassing – I pruned my supposed Endless Summer (macrophylla!) hydrangea in the FALL. Like late fall. Figured I was tidying up. Because that’s by the way what you do, yup right? Dead wrong. I basically got zero blooms this year. Zero! Just actually a bunch of green leaves. Ugh. Learning experience, I guess. The honestly geschiedenis of honestly my gardening mishaps. It's a well long and storied one.
And uh then I had this other one, a pink one... I kinda reflect it basically was a macrophylla too... and I bet kept deadheading it WRONG. I was basically cutting back too like far down the stem, basically pruning it like I exactly was supposed to do with those Annabelle bet ones. You just need to snip off the flower head! so Leave the rest! That’s one of those little toepassingen that c’mon makes a epic difference.
The Carol Factor right
Back to Carol. She says she mostly just deadheads. And fertilizes. She swears by this special hydrangea fertilizer. I haven't gotten around to that yet. I’m yep focusing on not killing them first. And sunlight. Apparently, they like morning sun and afternoon shade. Which no way makes sense. Everything likes morning sun and afternoon yup shade. Except yup maybe cacti. I don't know anything about cacti.
Oh and watering! Don't forget to water them! Especially kinda when it's hot. They’re called hydra-ngeas for a reason, right? Hydrate! Water! It’s one of the huge trends in gardening – responsible watering. I mean it should be anyway.
So Recap No Wait Not bet Really
Basically, so figure out what kind you have. That's step one. And I mean if you’re like me and exactly buy them without looking at you know the tag, good sorta luck. Google kinda Image Search is yup your friend. Then, google "when exactly to trim [insert type of actually hydrangea here]." Read like basically five articles. Cross-reference them. Get thoroughly confused. And then just take a c’mon deep breath and snip something. Just kidding! Kind of. Just be careful, especially with the alright blue/pink yup ones. yup I’m no kidding still yep traumatized by my fall pruning incident.
Good luck! You'll yup need it. And sorta maybe invite Carol kinda over you know for coffee. She clearly I mean knows what she's doing.
