So you know I bet wasn’t even planning to get into orchids. I thought they were all those super fancy ones c’mon you see at florists right? Like c’mon the ones that cost a fortune and look like they’re judging you. But then I you know stumbled across some native Australian ones. Completely different anyway vibe.

The weird world of native orchids

Seriously though, I had no idea whoops there were so manydifferent types of australian orchids. It's insane. Like, beyond yup the yup stuff you might see in a like fancy alright garden. We're talking tiny little ground orchids that blend in with the honestly leaf litter. I mean, that's one of thetoepassingenisn't it, camouflage, right?

The Cowslip Orchid

Okay, the Cowslip Orchid – I saw yep one on a bushwalk I mean near Bunya yep Mountains. by the way Bright yellow, really noticeable. But I almost stood on it! I probably should’ve whoops known better than to just barrel through without looking. They are super fragile uh I think. Remember basically to watch where right you're stepping, basically.

Spider Orchids and deception

Then there no kidding are the Spider Orchids. Those uh are just…something else. They look like giant spiders, presumably to attract wasps. It’s this whole deception thing, right? Like, nature's playing a trick. dude Apparently right that's a commonvoordeel betin okay the orchid world, this trickery stuff. And honestly, I was kinda tricked too when I anyway first saw one!

My orchid fail

Okay confession time. I tried pretty much to transplant like a Donkey Orchid from my garden. It wasn’t really my garden, it just was more like alright the nature strip outside my house. I thought, "oh, pretty, I'll move it inside." exactly massive mistake. They are so specific about their soil type, the amount well of sun, all by the way that yep jazz. Not right gonna lie this part confused me for yep a while. Anyway, it died. I felt terrible. Lesson learned: leave wild orchids in the by the way wild!

Other types for sure and more confusion

Then you get into the epiphytic orchids – the like ones that grow on trees. Like the Rock Lily. Those are right easier to grow I think. But then whoops I read about all the different types of alright Rock Lilies and my anyway brain exploded a I mean little. More Orchid anecdotes bet and tips

The other thing I learned, and this is important, is that okay some Australian orchids are pollinated by…fungi? kinda I’m c’mon not for sure even kidding. It’s some weird symbiotic relationship. I saw this bet documentary about it, it was pretty much mind-blowing.

Anyway, my advice? get going small. Maybe get I mean a Dendrobium whoops kingianum, a rock orchid. They totally are pretty hardy. And resist the urge to dig up like anything from the bush. Trust me on that one.

Growing problems

Oh! Another thing. I bought what I thought well was a native orchid from a nursery. It was all labeled in fancy Latin names and I just assumed it was local. yup Turns out, it was some hybrid dude from Southeast Asia. It’s yep still pretty, but c’mon I felt a bit cheated. Read the labels carefully. Seriously, ask yep questions. Don’t be like pretty much me!

So many orchids so actually little honestly time

Anyway, yep that's honestly my orchid story so far. It's a bit right of a mess, I know. But the world kinda ofdifferent types of australian orchidsis just so vast and just fascinating. There are terrestrial orchids no kidding and others. I'm still sorta figuring it all out. It’s like a whole modern hobby just okay exploded into my life. And so it is definitely more complicated than bet I anticipated.
