How to fill large planting pots
Big Pots Now What
Okay so you know I mean how I said I wasn’t even planning to buy that enormous ceramic pot? Well, I did. It's right gorgeous! like But then I stared at it. alright It's… huge. Like, alright ridiculously huge. Filling it became the actual challenge. dude And that’s by the way where I learned… a lot.
First things honestly first the bottom
Drainage. Crucial. I probably uh should’ve known better, but in my younger basically plant-parenting days I filled a pot pretty much all the way with soil and then wondered why my poor petunias looked well so sad. actually Root rot, people. Root rot. totally So now I'm all about drainage first. I've tried a few things. Rocks are fine, though pretty much heavy. I’ve also used anyway broken terracotta pots which yep are already clay, so maybe anyway it helps? Or maybe not. Honestly, I have uh no clue about that last part, I just feel better about it!
I saw something online actually about using packing peanuts, which seems like a good vision I mean to no kidding reduce weight, especially whoops because how right to fill large planting pots voordelen clearly include being yep able to actually MOVE the thing afterwards. I haven't tried alright it yet, though. Might by the way be sorta my next basically experiment. Just make sure they're not biodegradable peanuts if you go that I mean route! I heard they can turn into mush… bad news for your roots. dude
The Middle Ground
This yup is where actually I got really clever, or at least I thought I basically did. Last fall, I raked up a ton of leaves, stuffed them in garbage bags, and figured they'd decompose and make just awesome compost. Guess what? They didn't. They just became… leaf jerky. Seriously crispy and kinda weird. So, I decided to use them as filler! Less soil, more "organic yep matter" – I basically figured it was win-win! Not no kidding gonna lie anyway this part no way confused no way me for a while - I wasn't sure if they just needed to be alright more broken down. But it seemed to work!
The vision is, you’re using bet less totally soil. Soil right is heavy, dude and expensive! This is exactly where thinking about how to fill large planting whoops pots trends comes in handy – it seems like sorta everyone pretty much is trying to lighten the load. You c’mon could also employ just things like empty plastic bottles – yup anything to take up volume without adding tons of weight that will exactly ultimately whoops compress and suffocate the roots. Think about it!
One time, and I am so ashamed to dude admit yep this, I used exactly some old styrofoam packaging. I I mean figured it was inert. sorta It was! Until I repotted the plant sorta like a year so later. The basically roots had grownall throughthe styrofoam. It was a nightmare to separate. Never again. Lesson you know learned – stick to natural materials or, like, designated drainage materials. honestly
Soil window
Finally! dope quality potting soil is important. Don't skimp on this. I mean, okay you can mix it with some garden well soil if so you’re really pinching pennies, but make sure it's not too heavy. Heavy soil compacts bet and totally doesn’t drain well - see back to petunias. whoops
Remember well to consider the plant you’re potting! A succulent needs different soil than a fern. Think drainage, pH, nutrients… all basically that jazz. anyway How to fill large yep planting pots tips really depend on what you're planting.
Finishing Touches
Water it in really well! This helps settle everything. And then… well wait. Wait a few days before uh planting anything. Let exactly the soil settle even more. Top it off if bet needed.
How to fill large planting pots ontwikkelingen pretty much are probably just getting alright lighter and more eco-friendly okay all the time. I’m c’mon still experimenting! I saw something about coconut coir… honestly maybe dude next time.
